Nylon vs. polyester: what is the difference?

Nowadays, the two most popular choices of soft floor covering are nylon and polyester. But while these two materials are very similar in many respects, there are indeed differences that may not suit your renovation. Check out the following main differences between these two leading alternatives.

Stain resistance

Although some brands of nylon tend to be slightly more absorbent, the fact is, this absorbency rate is indeed still relatively low. So both nylon and polyester are nearly on par in this department. However, you'll need to research different manufacturing companies to ensure you get an installation that's appropriate for your space. Regardless, in either case, they're both very resistant to stains.

Softness

Polyester has a slight advantage in this category, but it all depends on what brand you select. If the silky-smooth factor is high on your priority list, then you may want to opt for polyester. On the other hand, because of nylon's slight edge in hard-wearing capabilities, it tends to be a bit rougher to the touch. But, again, it all comes down to brands, so do take the time to visit options in the showroom.

Durability

With its somewhat stiffer, bouncier fibers, nylon carpeting isn't as soft to the touch as polyester. However, this means this carpeting is highly dirt-resistant since dirt has trouble penetrating the fibers. In addition, its ability to maintain fibers upright is a significant bonus – known as texture retention – which ensures creases and marks aren't left behind after furniture is moved. Polyester, on the other hand, though smoother, is also more pliable and thus more susceptible to movement. Resilient nonetheless, polyester makes for higher flexibility in terms of fiber movement.
